Overview
Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 kilometres by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty, from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island. (Wikipedia)
Lamu Fort is one spot you will get to visit which is a multi-storied building that was built between 1813 and 1821. It houses an environmental museum and a library. The environmental museum is divided into three sections, the marine section, freshwater and terrestrial section. The fort is majorly used for community events.
Lamu Museum is located in the Lamu Archipelago. It features fascinating collections and exhibits that represent the material culture of the coastal people like the Boni, Pokomo and Orma.
Takwa Ruins are the remains of a thriving Swahili trading town that was abandoned in the 17th century. It is a historical site that features a unique mosque with a large pillar believed to symbolise the burial of a Sheikh. The ruins are located on the southeastern corner of Manda Island. The place is suitable for picnics and overnight camping.
The Swahili House Museum located in the northern part of Lamu town gives visitors a glimpse of the traditional set up of a Swahili home. It features a Swahili home with neat and furnished living areas, bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms.
The Fort of Shela situated along the sand dunes of Shela beach depicts the Omani architectural design. It is an elegant and unique sanctuary that offers a tranquil environment for personalised hospitality. The Fort is a paradise for kite surfers. Yoga and meditation classes are also offered at the Fort.
German Post Office Museum was opened in 1996. The museum features exhibits and photographs that show the long historical contacts between Germany and Kenya. It depicts the early form of communication which was through postal services.
